The 1948 Olympians
In 2011 with the 2012 London Olympics on the horizon I was inspired to produce a series of portraits on people who had competed in the 1948 Olympics in London.
Meeting them and hearing their amazing stories of a time just after the war, when England was rebuilding itself from the rubble, food rationing was still in place and training was something you did for the sheer love of it. It was armature sport in the true sense of the word and competing was for fun.
Many of the wonderful Olympians I met were in the 80’s and 90’s but all of them had a great deal to say about this marvelous time in their lives. One thing that all of them said was just how proud they were and how much fun they had. It was the world’s youth coming together after years of hardship and fighting to show the world that you can come together in peace. It was a special moment for them.
Sadly, many of the people in the series have now passed away but there achievements will never be forgotten and I feel blessed and honored to have spent some time with them.
